Cummings said at the 2018 capstone event, “Diversity is not our problem-it is our promise!” “We are growing not only in terms of participants but also with regard to the activities that participants organize, such as interfaith book clubs, potlucks, and classes with neighboring faith groups.”ĭialogue lets a diverse community envision a shared future, one where that diversity is embraced as something that makes a community strong, resilient, and compassionate. “Courageous Conversations has transformed the way people talk about race and religious difference in our community,” said Rabbi Susan Grossman. “It is our honor to stand alongside dedicated volunteers who are living out this courage.”īolstered by the trust and relationships built through these dialogues, the members of this community have turned their hopes into concrete action. “One of our mantras at Essential Partners is that community is an act of courage,” said John Sarrouf, co-Executive Director of Essential Partners. They talked about their convictions, hopes, and fears. They shared how they wanted to be understood and what they wanted to understand about one another. People of all faiths and races talked about what connects and what holds them apart. The project has engaged more than five hundred residents in healthy, open, honest dialogue about their experiences of racism and religious bias. Hundreds of residents joined these conversations, representing many faith traditions-Jewish and Muslim, Catholic and Unitarian, Baha’i and Pagan, Mormon, and those with no faith community at all.” “With the skillful help of EP’s practitioners,” said co-founder Reverend Paige Getty, “we trained dozens of local volunteers to facilitate dialogues about faith, race, and prejudice in our community. With initial support from the Horizon Foundation, Essential Partners has collaborated with the faith and civic leaders of Howard county since 2017 to design robust, expansive, inclusive public dialogues, while training dozens of volunteer facilitators to lead those courageous conversations. The overarching theme addresses the question, “How do we work towards creating a connected community of different people rather than a community that lets different people in?” The mission is to learn from and hear other perspectives, to explore how residents live together in their experiences of race and religious bias. The Howard County Courageous Conversations project comprises clergy and congregants from 52 faith communities. “We have to repair the broken trust that makes a community-and a democracy-possible.” “For us to heal the fissures in our community, we needed to learn how to connect across differences, listen to one another, and understand one another more profoundly,” said Reverend Dr. What if they addressed the growing divides by inviting religious leaders and their congregations to have tough but civil and meaningful conversations about patriotism, religion, and race? Cummings urged his trusted colleagues to find some way to halt the rapid unraveling of the social fabric-to heal their diverse community. Turner, senior pastor of St John Baptist Church of Columbia, Maryland, Rep. Talking to Maryland State Representative Vanessa Atterbeary and Reverend Dr. Cummings recognized the same ugly divisions he fought in that tumultuous era of change. Having been active in the Civil Rights movement as a young man, Rep. The recent election had polarized the country. In 2017, Representative Elijah Cummings had grave fears about the future of United States democracy. “FRBs might be-might be-just this generic phenomenon associated with a whole range of possible sources,” says Cornell University astronomer Shami Chatterjee, who studies the bursts but is not part of the discovery team. They’re also moving toward the conclusion that maybe, as with many other celestial phenomena, there are multiple ways to cook up a fast radio burst. Scientists are struggling to explain the cosmic anachronism. “This is definitely not a place fast radio bursts are expected to live,” Bryan Gaensler, an astronomer at the University of Toronto and a co-author of the new paper, posted on Twitter. Finding this burst among a cluster of aging stars is kind of like finding a smartphone embedded in Stonehenge-the observation doesn’t make sense. Based on observations to date, scientists surmised that the bursts are powered by young, short-lived cosmic objects called magnetars.īut a fast radio burst discovered last year has now been traced to a globular cluster about 11.7 million light-years away, near the neighboring spiral galaxy M81, according to a paper describing the discovery posted on the scientific preprint server arXiv. Often originating billions of light-years away, the extremely bright, extremely brief bursts of radio waves known as fast radio bursts, or FRBs, have defied explanation since they were first spotted in 2007. The repeating bursts of energy seem to be coming from an ancient group of stars called a globular cluster, which is among the last places astronomers expected to find them. "In this specific case, the magnification of the signal was about a factor of 30, allowing us to see through the high redshift universe," explains Roy.Bright, fleeting blasts of radio waves coming from the vicinity of a nearby galaxy are deepening one of astronomy’s biggest mysteries. This detection was made possible by a phenomenon called gravitational lensing, in which the light emitted by the source is bent due to the presence of another massive body, such as an early type elliptical galaxy, between the target galaxy and the observer, effectively resulting in the "magnification" of the signal. The signal detected by the team was emitted from this galaxy when the universe was only 4.9 billion years old in other words, the look-back time for this source is 8.8 billion years. "Due to the immense distance to the galaxy, the 21 cm emission line had redshifted to 48 cm by the time the signal travelled from the source to the telescope," says Chakraborty. Using GMRT data, Arnab Chakraborty, a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Physics and Trottier Space Institute of McGill University, and Nirupam Roy, Associate Professor, the Department of Physics, IISc, have detected a radio signal from atomic hydrogen in a distant galaxy at redshift z=1.29. "Until now, the most distant galaxy detected using 21 cm emission was at redshift z=0.376, which corresponds to a look-back time - the time elapsed between detecting the signal and its original emission - of 4.1 billion years (Redshift represents the change in wavelength of the signal depending on the object's location and movement a greater value of z indicates a farther object)," it said. However, this radio signal is extremely weak and it is nearly impossible to detect the emission from a distant galaxy using current telescopes due to their limited sensitivity. Thus, 21 cm emission is a direct tracer of the atomic gas content in both nearby and distant galaxies, the PTI report said. "Therefore, understanding the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time requires tracing the evolution of neutral gas at different cosmological epochs", the statement said.Ītomic hydrogen emits radio waves of 21 cm wavelength, which can be detected using low-frequency radio telescopes like the GMRT. When hot ionised gas from the surrounding medium of a galaxy falls onto the galaxy, the gas cools and forms atomic hydrogen, which then becomes molecular hydrogen, and eventually leads to the formation of stars, it was explained. The findings have been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.Ītomic hydrogen is the basic fuel required for star formation in a galaxy. The cross-over option is for recording a collection of tracks (with each track played on its own channel), with each track played on a separate channel. The Stand-alone CUE Splitter splits a single large audio file into smaller files, usually less than forty min. There are two different types of CUE Splitters available, the Stand Alone CUE Splitter, which are best suited for smaller recording projects, and the CUEux, which come with a cross-over option. Additionally, the use of a CUE Splitter allows for easier storage and archive, as well as duplication of these media files on hand, for future usage. CUE Splitter can be used to make copies of any type of media - flac files, wma, apa, and any other format that can be burnt into my files, or recorded onto a DVD or other media. So far, this article hasn't touched on the various benefits of using a CUE Splitter, so I'll leave you to read some CUE Splitter reviews and related information on the web.įor those of you who don't know, a CUE Splitter splits large tracks (and sometimes even movies) into their constituent files, allowing for superior file sharing if one has the right equipment. CUE Splitter is actually free software a very popular one at that. And a CUE Splitter is a splitter, a device that splits a track (or audio track) into smaller files (listen to my music fans - it's a lot more difficult to understand than it sounds). The term "CUE" stands for "Computer Audio". A CUE Splitter is one of the most useful audio recording tools for anyone serious about Medieval Music. At the same time, UI design is a highly collaborative role, requiring you to work closely with UX designers, key business stakeholders (or clients), and developers. Everything you create as a UI designer has an impact on the overall user experience, so it’s important to understand your audience and how they work. Of course, visual and interactive design is just one component of the UI designer’s role. They design all the screens, touchpoints, and elements a user encounters when navigating their way around a digital product-think tapping buttons and icons, swiping through photo galleries, or scrolling through your Instagram feed. UI designers work exclusively with digital interfaces, such as apps, video games, and websites. Will it be easier to get a remote job now because of COVID-19?įirst things first: What do UI designers actually do, and is it something that can be done remotely? What does a UI designer do?.Is it possible to find remote work with no prior UI design experience?.Can you work remotely straight from a UI program or bootcamp?.What is the remote job market like for UI designers?.Is it possible to work as a remote UI designer?.If you want to skip ahead to a particular section, just use the clickable menu below. We’ll also look at what the remote job market is like for UI designers, and explore how much you could earn. In this post, we’ll consider whether or not it’s possible (and feasible) to work as a remote user interface designer. If you’re an aspiring user interface (UI) designer, you might be wondering: Is UI a job you can do remotely? The world of work is changing rapidly, and for many, this means more flexibility and a better work-life balance. By 2028, it’s expected that 73% of all teams will have remote workers. Please note that direct touch interaction is not supported in this mode. When this mode is enabled, your second display will appear upside-down. Enable Teleprompter Mode. Plug the Luna Display hardware into your Mac, and open the Luna Mac and iPad apps.We like the Glide Gear TMP100 beam splitter (Amazon, $199). Grab your gear! Youâll need to get set up with a beam splitter, camera, and Luna Display. But Teleprompter Mode automatically flips your display image, so that your beam splitter reflects the correct image orientation. Without Teleprompter Mode, the image on your iPad would be reflected at you upside down and backward. Teleprompter Mode flips your iPad screen to work with a beam splitter - ideal for giving direct eye contact during video calls.Ī beam splitter (or teleprompter) splits a beam of light in two, reflecting an image back at you. Typography design is one of the most vital elements in graphic design and UX/UI. Stanley MorisonĮarly 20th Century British designer who created the famous “Times New Roman” font. Carol Twomblyįamously designed type for Adobe, and is known for her type creations “Trajan,” “Myriad,” “Adobe Caslon,” and “Chaparral.” John BaskervilleĪ British typographer from the 18th century who designed “Baskerville,” a font that still lives today. Jan TschicholdĪ significant figure in the development of graphic design in the 20th century, this typographer, calligrapher, and book designer built the principles of typographic modernism (not to mention developing the visual identity of penguin books). Perhaps the most famous type designer, is the inventor of movable type and the “blackletter” font. Here are a few you might find interesting. Well, a lot of them are actually named after their creators). Famous typographers to knowīelieve it or not, there are plenty of famous type designers to learn about (ever wondered where some of those font names come from? He invented the printing press in the 15th century, and the first named font known as "blackletter," catalyzing print design and typography as we know it.Ĭheck out this video for a brief, to-the-point history.ĭeep-diving into the history of writing is a rabbit hole that can last a lifetime, so we’ll leave it there for this article, as long as you get how vital text is to us humans! So, if you are a designer or typographer or thinking about pursuing the craft, your skills are indeed valuable. Hand lettering was very time-consuming and only reserved for the educated elite of society, fostering the need for the later development of typographic systems.īack to Gutenberg- this is where modern typography began. This concept eventually made its way to the western world, where pictograms evolved into alphabets that led to the art of calligraphy, which involved beautiful hand-lettering done chiefly by monks. It was the Egyptians who started the art of writing with ink. That’s evidence that it’s simply human nature to communicate language visually. All three aforementioned were unique and independently created forms of writing. Then, around 3200 BC, the ancient Egyptians developed hieroglyphics, also a symbolic pictographic form of writing.Īn early Chinese writing system seems to have emerged around 1300 BC from the Shang Dynasty. This was made up of symbols carved into clay to communicate various languages in the written form. The first script to ever be developed was called cuneiform in around 3400 BC. It technically began in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq). It all started with a guy named Gutenberg and a font called Blackletter. This is a beautiful, vital, and underrated aspect of graphic design, so we can't wait to give it the spotlight it deserves in this article. We'll end the article with some suggestions for further research so you can continue learning about this intricate craft. I've assumed my problem is not typical and I'm searching for a clue, any clue. "My question may not seem mathematical in nature, but here goes: mechanics and auto technicians are stumped trying to find the problem with my car engine that results in the check engine light being ON all the time. "Can't we plot parametric equations in this plotter? Thank you for making Transum free and available on the internet. I find it mesmerizing that an equation can give amazing results. When writing the equation, cos(x²)=sin(y²) the following graph is plotted. For now, I love plotting them even though I don't understand them well. When I know more about Trigonometry I will understand why these graphs are the way they look. Although I don't understand much about trigonometric graphs, I have plotted some trigonometric graphs with beautiful patterns. I am very thankful for Transum and through this, my passion for math has increased. "Hello, I am Soumi Dana, currently studying in 8th grade. Unfortunately it only plots the positive answer to the square root so the circles would not plot. "Absoultely brilliant got my kids really engaged with graphs. "First of all, congratulations for the beautiful job! But I have a question: is there a way to save/download the graphics? thus adjusting the coordinates and the equation. "Would be great if we could adjust the graph via grabbing it and placing it where we want too. "It would be nice to be able to draw lines between the table points in the Graph Plotter rather than just the points. Last day before half term yr 8 were using Graph Plotter to attempt the challenges - all were successful /uzNjAszZxs- Heather Scott October 22, 2017 Though Misty and Walter’s friendship seems to be evolving into something more, this isn’t meant to be a straightforward romantic relationship. Lyle and her co-creator Bart Nickerson pitched Wood over the course of a lunch and, he was such a fan of the first season, that he said yes without even seeing a script. Walter and Misty initially meet on a citizens detective message board-PuttingTheSICKinForensics seeks AfricanGrey-before hitting the road to find her missing teammate Natalie. One of the now-adult survivors of an infamous plane crash that left her team stranded in the wilderness for 19 months, Misty has an offbeat way of interacting with the world (talks too much about her pet parrot) and a twisted sense of justice (drugging a woman who was sniffing after the Yellowjackets and chaining her up in a basement for most of season one). Wood plays Walter, a new companion for Misty ( Christina Ricci) and a true crime obsessive who happens to be so friendly and chipper that you have to wonder if he’s a serial killer. It’s this quality, even when discussing the freakier aspects of human nature, that makes him so precisely well-suited for his role on this season of Yellowjackets, TV’s hottest cannibalism drama about a girls soccer team. Though the actor is now 42 and a father of two, with flecks of gray dotting his beard, he still retains his trademark youthful innocence and affability. “Serial killers were always really interesting to me.” “I'm fascinated by cults,” Elijah Wood says, trademark blue eyes widening.
